Information on Medications

The use of medication in managing psychological conditions has a lot of evidence. We use medications that have been licensed internationally for the conditions you might be suffering. Sometimes your doctor will want to prescribe a medication that is not licensed for your condition but for which clinical experience has shown a lotto benefits> in such situations, your Consultant will give you the information about the medication and their reason for prescribing and it is your choice to decide if you want the medication or not.

Doctors provide information to guide your decision on medication. You are entitled to understand how the medication works and it's side effects both short and long terms. You also need to know what could happen if you discontinued the medication. Your Doctor must not just give you a script for medication that has not been adequately discussed with you including other options. It is important that you know the cost impaction of your medication. This can influence your decision. Your doctor should give you an idea of the costs of the various medications that he/she is recommending you to choose from. Sometimes Patients ask Doctors to make the choice for them. Please if they make that choice for you, do not forget to ask them why they pick that particular medication first.

Our patients have access to Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) about any medication they may be prescribed. We provide access to the 'Choice and Medication' resource through their website. This resource contains details of and answers the most frequently asked questions about over 100 antidepressants, antipsychotics and other drugs that are used to treat mental illness and addiction. This information is provided as a useful tool, not just for professionals but also to patients and care givers. It includes information on what the drug is, how it should be taken and what the possible side effects might be.
